Antisemitism row triggers resignations at Die Linke Berlin

Germany’s left-wing Die Linke Party is facing a wave of resignations due to its failure to take a strong stance on antisemitism, as reported by Der Spiegel.

Recent defections from the party’s Berlin wing include two former Berlin Senators and three former Berlin party leaders. Despite their resignations, these leaders remain committed to left-wing politics and working with Die Linke in the Berlin Parliament.

The resignations were triggered by a debate at the Die Linke Berlin Party conference on a motion opposing antisemitism, which included condemnation of celebrations of October 7 and accused Hamas and Hezbollah of “eliminatory antisemitism.”

High-ranking members also walked out of the conference, leading to a restart of voting procedures and a failed attempt to pass the altered motion due to lack of a two-thirds majority.

A resolution was eventually reached to protect party members attacked internally or externally, stating, “Our solidarity ends where the massacre of October 7 is celebrated as an act of resistance or the war crimes of the Israeli army are applauded.”
