UN Chief praises Iraqi Kurdistan’s parliamentary polls

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, extended his congratulations to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq for the successful parliamentary elections held on October 20. Guterres commended the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) for their organization of the elections, with support from the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

In a statement released by Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Guterres urged political actors to resolve any electoral disputes through legal means and form an inclusive government promptly. He also called on all political leaders and society to maintain a peaceful environment as the final election results are awaited in the Kurdistan Region.

Guterres affirmed the UN’s commitment to assisting Iraq in securing its democratic achievements and building a promising future for its citizens. The peaceful and orderly conduct of the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region has been recognized as a positive step towards achieving stability and progress in Iraq.
