The United Kingdom is stepping up its support for Ukraine by allocating an additional £120 million to the Maritime Capability Coalition. This funding aims to enhance Ukraine’s naval capabilities and protect the Ukrainian grain corridor from intensified Russian attacks on port infrastructure in the Black Sea. The UK is also seeking partners to co-finance the supply of maritime drones and surveillance radar systems.
In collaboration with Norway, the UK is aiming to secure around US$130 million for the coalition. Ukraine has already benefited from equipment such as amphibious vehicles, raiding vessels, anti-ship missiles, and ammunition through this coalition.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of countering Russian aggression in the Black Sea to safeguard global food security. The European Union has also urged action to halt Russian attacks on civilian ships transporting Ukrainian grain. This support comes amidst a surge in Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports and civilian vessels, causing significant damage to infrastructure.
The Maritime Capability Coalition, established in December 2023, plays a crucial role in bolstering Ukraine’s maritime defense. The UK’s increased funding demonstrates a commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s resilience against external threats.
