The Turkish parliament has officially extended its troops’ participation in the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon for another year, as reported by state news agency Anadolu. Turkey has been contributing troops to UNIFIL since 2006, currently having 97 troops stationed in Lebanon amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the importance of Turkey’s role in peacekeeping operations and stressed the need to continue their contribution. Erdogan previously criticized the UN for failing to protect peacekeepers in southern Lebanon from Israeli attacks, calling the situation both shameful and worrying.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attacks on UNIFIL troops, stating they may constitute a war crime. Despite the challenges and tensions, UNIFIL remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining peace in the region.
