Home Affairs minister Leon Schreiber is facing pressure to declare American musician Chris Brown an “undesirable person” before his scheduled performance in South Africa on December 14 and 15. Brett Herron, secretary-general of the GOOD party, has written a letter to Schreiber citing Brown’s history of being denied entry into countries like the UK and Canada due to his felony charge of assault against Rihanna in 2009.
Herron argues that allowing Brown to perform in South Africa contradicts the government’s commitment to combating gender-based violence and femicide. An advocacy group called Women For Change has launched a petition with over 45,550 signatures, urging concert organisers and the government to reconsider hosting Brown.
The GOOD party also voiced their concern, stating, “No stage for abusers. Stand up for women’s safety.” The controversy surrounding Brown’s upcoming shows raises important questions about societal attitudes towards abuse and the responsibility of event organisers and government officials.
