Soldier from Russia’s Tuva Raped Ukrainian Woman in Chernihiv Oblast, While Two Subordinates Forced Her to Undress and Beat Her

Ukrainian law enforcement officials have pressed charges against three Russian soldiers for committing war crimes in the town of Yahidne, Chernihiv Oblast, including the rape and torture of a local woman. According to the investigation, Russian Sergeant Chayan Chynan and two other soldiers illegally detained a local resident, whom Chynan raped twice. Chynan, a father of three daughters, was awarded the “Order of Courage” in Russia, Slidstvo.Info reports.

On March 4, 2022, three Russian soldiers stationed in occupied Yahidne, Chernihiv Oblast, spotted an unarmed civilian woman on the street. They pointed their weapons at her and ordered her into a house. Ivan Oorzhak struck the woman with the butt of his rifle. Inside the house, the soldiers checked the woman’s documents and then Khezhik-ool Shaktar-ool ordered her to undress, threatening her with death and torture. The woman was held naked in a windowless, unheated room for about an hour before Chayan Chynan raped her.

The soldiers then moved the woman to the basement of a local school, where other residents were being held. There, Chynan raped her again.

Slidstvo.Info established that Chayan Chynan was born on June 24, 1987, in the village of Solchur, Republic of Tuva. When Chayan was a schoolboy, his family later moved to the capital, Kyzyl, near the Mongolian border. The distance from Kyzyl to Yahidne, where Chynan and his colleagues were stationed, is approximately 4,228 kilometers.

After completing the 9th grade, Chynan trained as an auto-mechanic and served a year in the Russian army. After his service, he married and had two daughters. In 2009, he signed a contract with the 55th Separate Mountain Motor Rifle Brigade of the Russian Federation. Local propaganda media justified his decision to join the military by citing financial difficulties: “The children were growing up, and money was needed for their upbringing and education.” Soon after, a third daughter was born to the couple.

Photos of Chynan with his wife and three daughters were published on a Russian website honoring “heroes of the SVO” (‘Special Military Operation’ – ed.).

Another photo showed the couple in traditional Tuva attire, standing in the snow and holding a horse by the reins.

From the early days of the full-scale invasion, Chynan and other soldiers of the 55th Brigade participated in the capture of Chernihiv Oblast. Chynan was the commander of the 2nd Mortar Platoon of the Russian Army.

“The mother and father embraced their son for the last time, kissed him on the head, and took a final breath of his familiar and beloved scent,” local media described Chynan’s departure for the “Special Military Operation”.

Chayan’s parents never saw him again as he was killed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on March 14, 2022, in Chernihiv Oblast, just 10 days after he assaulted the woman in Yahidne.

After Chayan’s death, his eldest daughter enrolled in a cadet school in St. Petersburg because she “wants to defend the homeland like her father.” His mother and wife now collect humanitarian aid and send it to Russian soldiers for the war in Ukraine.

Another Russian soldier potentially involved in the abuse of the Yahidne resident is 30-year-old Khezhik-ool Shaktar-ool, also from the Republic of Tuva. He has been serving in the Russian army since at least 2015, as evidenced by photos in military uniform on his VKontakte page. Kezhik-ool is probably proud of his service in the Russian army, as he posts a dozen photos of himself in uniform, near equipment, and in a barracks.

Slidstvo.Info journalists discovered that in 2014, Khezhik-ool had a Russian passport issued in the Ulug-Khemsky district of Tuva. He also used microfinance services more than once, taking out “quick loans”. For example, in January 2014, he borrowed 10,000 rubles ($297) from DengiSrazu.ru.

Khezhik-ool serves in the 55th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, 1st Mortar Platoon of the Russian Army.

He has not been active on social media since 2016, and his relatives do not appear to have published any joint photos. He is believed to still be fighting in Ukraine.

The third suspect in the abuse of civilians in Yahidne is Ivan Oorzhak, from the city of Kyzyl, Republic of Tuva. He serves in the 3rd Mortar Platoon, 2nd Mechanized Brigade, 55th Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces.

Previously, Chayan Chynan, Ivan Oorzhak, and Khezhik-ool Shaktar-ool were convicted in absentia by the Chernihiv District Court to 12 years in prison for violating the laws and customs of war. Investigators proved that the Russians threatened to kill a family in Yahidne and brutally beat the homeowner.

Additionally, the soldiers are implicated in the illegal detainment of 368 residents of Yahidne (including 69 children) in the basement of a local school for 27 days, using them as “human shields.” Due to inadequate conditions and lack of medical care, 10 people died during this period.

Chayan Chynan, Ivan Oorzhak, and Khezhik-ool Shaktar-ool will be tried in absentia again for the rape and abuse of the woman. They are indicted under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the laws and customs of war). Chynan will receive his sentence posthumously, while the other two soldiers, if captured, face imprisonment for 8 to 12 years.
