The Singaporean government has taken action to block access to 10 websites with potential links to foreign actors aiming to spread disinformation campaigns against the country. This move comes as Singapore gears up for upcoming elections scheduled before November next year.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) expressed concerns over the 10 websites disguising themselves as Singapore-based platforms by incorporating local imagery and content, including materials generated by artificial intelligence. The tactic of creating websites to attract local followers for future hostile information campaigns is a common strategy employed by malicious foreign actors.
Two of the websites even mimicked legitimate Singaporean websites closely, potentially misleading audiences into believing they represent official viewpoints or local sentiments. The government’s decision to block access to these websites underscores its commitment to preventing outside interference and safeguarding the integrity of information in the lead-up to the elections.
