Russia’s Foreign Ministry recently summoned Germany’s ambassador to express their protest against the establishment of a new NATO naval command center along the Baltic Sea coast. The center was inaugurated by Germany to enhance defense readiness in the Baltic Sea region amidst Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
The Moscow authorities strongly objected to the creation of the naval command center in Rostock, stating that the expansion of NATO military infrastructure in former East Germany will lead to negative consequences. They also warned of a corresponding response from the Russian side.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry criticized the new center as a violation of the 1990 German reunification treaty that prohibits foreign armed forces in the area. The center, led by a German admiral with staff from 11 NATO countries, aims to coordinate naval activities and provide continuous surveillance of the maritime situation in the Baltic Sea region.
