Peru Tightens Controls on Venezuelan Migrants Amid Crime Surge

Peru has taken steps to regulate Venezuelan migrant activities to combat rising crime rates. President Dina Boluarte implemented policies requiring Venezuelans to show valid labor and rental contracts to address security concerns like extortion and contract killings.

In a press conference, Boluarte emphasized the importance of ensuring legal employment and legitimate housing for Venezuelan migrants to monitor their activities closely. The government also plans to track remittances sent back to Venezuela to identify income sources, with consequences for those unable to explain their finances.

Furthermore, property owners will be prevented from renting to individuals without verified income, in collaboration with SUNAT for oversight. These measures come ahead of a national strike over extortion cases that have increased fivefold in recent years.

While critics fear these policies may fuel xenophobia and discrimination, Boluarte maintains her stance on addressing crime related to foreign nationals. The government’s decision reflects concerns about national security and crime rates, aiming to respond to public demand for action against extortion and violence.
