Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania made history by signing a bill that officially recognizes Diwali as a state holiday. Diwali, known as the “Festival of Lights,” is a significant Hindu holiday celebrated for five days, with the main festivities taking place on the third day.
During Diwali, followers celebrate life, come together with loved ones, and rejoice in the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. The holiday involves lighting candles, setting off firecrackers, and clay lamps known as “diyas.”
The bipartisan effort to establish Diwali as an official state holiday was led by Senators Greg Rothman and Nikil Saval. Shapiro emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the cultural heritage and contributions of the Asian American community in Pennsylvania.
While the law takes effect immediately, schools, government offices, and businesses are not mandated to close for the celebration. Shapiro highlighted the diversity of Pennsylvania as a strength, reaffirming the state’s commitment to inclusivity and unity.
