Osoba explains why leaders hesitate to transfer power to deputies.

Former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, highlighted the issue of suspicion and lack of trust as major reasons why many presidents and governors hesitate to transfer leadership to their deputies. Speaking at the 3rd Annual Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria in Abuja, Osoba emphasized that this governance challenge is not limited to Nigeria but seen worldwide.

He referenced the strained relationship between former US Vice President Al Gore and President Bill Clinton as an example of this issue. Despite the obstacles, Osoba remains hopeful that a deputy could eventually succeed their boss in Nigeria.

Adding to the conversation, APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje stated that the deputy leader concept is controversial even in theology, with God not having a deputy. However, he suggested that continued advocacy could lead to a constitutional review to empower deputy leaders.

Overall, the conference shed light on the complexities of the deputy leader dynamic and the need for improved relationships and legal protections for these essential roles in government.
