Only 21 Nigerian universities rank globally, educators report

An expert in Ecclesiastical Theology and Human Development, Prof. Moses Idowu, recently discussed the global ranking of Nigerian universities. Out of 274 universities in the country, only 21 were recognized in the rankings. Idowu expressed concerns about the misgovernance and maladministration prevalent within Nigerian universities.

He highlighted that Covenant University and Landmark University, both affiliated with Living Faith Tabernacle, ranked in the top tiers, Bands A and B. Among the 21 recognized universities, 19 were categorized in Bands B-D, with 15 federal and four state universities.

Idowu criticized stakeholders celebrating the rankings, emphasizing the need for improvement in Nigeria’s educational system. Dr. Ifeanyi Onyike and Dr. Oladipo Kolawole also shared insights on strategies to enhance global rankings, such as improving research output, investing in education infrastructure, and increasing international collaborations.

Overall, focusing on specialization, student-centered learning, and digital transformation could help Nigerian universities progress in global rankings.
