Police say a friend found his body in his townhouse on Davidson Street in Bellfield, near Ivanhoe, about 11.30am, after concerns were raised when he didn’t show up for work.
The pharmacist, who had purchased the home at the beginning of the year, was allegedly found with multiple stab wounds.
A 54-year-old man, who is not believed to be known to the victim, was this afternoon arrested a few hundred meters away and was interviewed in relation to the incident.
He was charged overnight with murder and has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later today.
Neighbours have told 9News they heard female screams at 11.30pm yesterday, prompting them to call triple zero.
”[I] couldn’t make out what she was saying, but it was just shrills… Over a period of maybe 10 minutes,” neighbor Susan Cotchin said.
“There was a police car there last night so I thought it had been dealt with but then this morning we heard more sobbing.”
Police said they attended the address but couldn’t access the property or determine where the complaint had come from and left after monitoring the area.
The homicide squad is investigating, and forensic detectives are also combing through the crime scene.
