Embarking on the Path to Peace and Prosperity: Omar Hilale’s Briefing on the Central African Republic

Recently, Ambassador Omar Hilale, the Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, presented a comprehensive update on the progress of peacebuilding efforts in the Central African Republic. This briefing, hosted by the Swiss presidency of the Security Council, highlighted the pivotal moment the CAR is currently facing in its quest for long-term peace and stability.

Hilale emphasized the transformative initiatives led by President Faustin Archange Touadera, aiming to shift the nation towards sustainable development and away from prolonged crisis and dependency on humanitarian aid. Central to this shift is the recently adopted National Development Plan, focused on peace, reconciliation, and prosperity for all Central Africans.

Looking ahead to the 2025 local elections, Hilale underscored their significance in driving inclusive governance and fostering citizen participation. These elections are not just a political event but a crucial step towards aligning projects with local needs and enhancing transparency and accountability. Hilale stressed the importance of timely elections to ensure the completion of the electoral cycle and uphold peacebuilding efforts.

As the CAR Configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission continues to advocate for financial and technical support, it remains committed to coordinating efforts and monitoring progress in close alignment with MINUSCA. Together, they aim to guide the CAR towards a future of recovery and sustainable development.

As the Council unanimously lauded Hilale’s contributions, it became evident that the Peacebuilding Commission’s engagement with the Security Council is crucial in amplifying the impact of peacebuilding initiatives. The Central African Republic is poised to embrace a brighter future, guided by determination and unwavering commitment to building lasting peace and prosperity.
