Justice Yahya Afridi Appointed as Chief Justice of Pakistan

President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, has appointed Justice Yahya Afridi as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan, following the retirement of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. This decision was made under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, with approval from PM Shehbaz Sharif and the special parliamentary committee.

Justice Yahya Afridi, who will serve a three-year term starting from October 26, has a rich legal background. He started as an advocate and later served as an Assistant Advocate General and Federal Counsel. In 2010, he was elevated to the bench of the Peshawar High Court, eventually becoming the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court in 2016.

Committee Meeting and Deliberations

The Special Parliamentary Committee, comprising members from various political parties, deliberated on three names for the top judge slot. The meeting attended by nine out of 12 members also discussed the names of Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar.

Justice Yahya Afridi has a distinguished legal career, starting as an advocate and rising to the position of Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court. He became a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2018, showcasing his dedication to upholding justice and the rule of law.
