Justice Afridi to be sworn in as CJP on Oct 26 after presidential nod – Pakistan

Justice Yahya Afridi Nominated as Next Chief Justice of Pakistan

After being nominated by a Special Parliamentary Committee, Justice Yahya Afridi is set to take oath as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan on Saturday, succeeding CJP Qazi Faez Isa who is set to retire on October 25. The nomination comes after the passage of the 26th Amendment, changing the process for appointing the CJP.

President Asif Ali Zardari appointed Justice Afridi under constitutional clauses, marking his term as the 30th CJP. The nomination process involved the consideration of seniority, leading to the selection of Justice Afridi over other contenders including Mansoor Ali Shah and Munib Akhtar.

The nomination has been praised for its transparency and adherence to parliamentary supremacy, with the Sindh Bar Council welcoming the decision as a “major advantage for the judiciary and the nation.” The appointment is seen as a potential catalyst for positive changes in Pakistan’s judicial landscape.

The decision was made during an in-camera meeting of the Special Parliamentary Committee, despite the absence of some political parties, highlighting the importance of this selection process in maintaining the integrity of the judiciary.

Stay tuned for more updates on this significant development.
