Israeli civilians unite to support each other during and after ongoing war – Israel News

During a ten-week reserve deployment near the Gaza border at the start of a war last October, the generosity of Israeli civilians shone through. Residents of Netivot treated soldiers to barbecue dinners, while ad-hoc stations provided necessities like food and clothing for free. Donated bulletproof vests and jelly donuts on Hanukkah lifted spirits amidst the difficult circumstances.

While individuals and small groups improvised donations, larger initiatives emerged. One group, Brothers in Arms, sourced equipment for soldiers, while the Hostages and Missing Families Forum worked to negotiate hostages’ release. The Civilian Committee of Inquiry sought answers and accountability for the government’s actions. A National Remembrance Ceremony honored the victims of the war.

These civilian-led efforts showcased the resilience and resourcefulness of Israelis in the face of government ineffectiveness. As the war’s anniversary approaches, there is hope that these examples of leadership will inspire a new generation of public servants in Israel.
