Boost in Iraq’s Electricity Production Expected Next Summer
The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, announced that electricity production in Iraq is set to increase next summer, given consistent gas imports. The country relies on importing gas from Turkmenistan and Iran, with imports expected to reach 50 million cubic meters per day.
Minister Fadel emphasized that Iraq’s gas production growth will eventually reduce the need for overseas imports. Recently, Iraq signed an agreement with Turkmenistan to secure 20 million cubic meters per day. Plans are also in place to import gas from Kazakhstan.
Electricity shortages in Iraq have been a longstanding issue, prompting efforts to diversify energy sources and invest in local gas production projects. The country suffers from daily power outages, which worsen during scorching summers.
Despite challenges with US sanctions on Iran affecting payments for gas imports, Iraq remains committed to enhancing electricity production. This strategic approach aims to improve living conditions for citizens and boost economic development.
With these initiatives, Iraq is poised to surpass 27,000 megawatts of electricity output next summer, marking a significant step towards addressing the country’s energy needs.
