Iran and Saudi Arabia to Hold Joint Military Exercises in the Red Sea
Iran and Saudi Arabia are reportedly planning to conduct joint military exercises in the Red Sea, marking a significant step towards easing tensions between the two regional powers. The move, if confirmed, would be the first of its kind between the long-time rivals who severed diplomatic ties in 2016.
Last year, Iran and Saudi Arabia resumed relations under a surprise deal brokered by China, signaling a potential shift in their strained relationship. According to Admiral Shahram Irani, commander of Iran’s navy, Saudi Arabia has requested the joint exercises in the Red Sea, with coordination underway for the upcoming military drills.
The decision comes amid escalating conflicts in the region, particularly in Yemen where Iran-backed Houthi rebels have carried out attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Saudi Arabia, leading a coalition against the Houthis, has faced challenges in reaching a peace deal to end the long-standing conflict.
