Junior Doctors End Hunger Strike in Kolkata
Junior doctors in Kolkata, India, have ended their 17-day hunger strike protesting the rape and murder of a colleague. The decision came after the victim’s parents appealed for their well-being. The doctors also met with the state’s chief minister to demand better security and conditions in government hospitals.
Protests erupted nationwide after a police volunteer was arrested for the heinous crime that took place at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Some doctors participating in the strike suffered dehydration and were hospitalized.
The doctors have vowed to continue fighting for justice and improved healthcare systems. Despite India’s efforts to enhance women’s safety following the 2012 Delhi gang rape, activists argue that women remain vulnerable to sexual violence.
While the government has made promises regarding safety measures, progress has been slow, leaving doctors and citizens concerned about the lack of basic amenities in government hospitals.
