Illinois inmates learn about democracy by voting in jail

These inmates are learning the importance of voting and community engagement. Sheriff Tom Dart emphasizes the significance of residents participating in the election process for a sense of ownership in their communities.
During the 2020 elections, Cook County became the first jail to set up polling stations inside the facility. Sheriff Dart notes that incarcerated individuals show a higher voter turnout compared to the general population.
Including detainees in the voting process is seen as a way to empower individuals and create a positive impact on their communities.
