Shortened Quarantine Period for Cats and Dogs Imported to Hong Kong
The Hong Kong government is proposing measures to substantially shorten the quarantine period for cats and dogs being imported to the city. This includes requirements such as rabies vaccines and antibody testing, aimed at reducing the current 120-day quarantine period for pets arriving from high-risk areas like mainland China, Macau, and Malaysia.
Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan revealed plans to work with the private sector to operate quarantine facilities for pets, with a pilot scheme targeted for launch in the first half of 2025. The proposal to reduce the quarantine period is in its final stages, with specific details yet to be disclosed.
Tse Chin-wan assured that the period could be substantially shortened, pending finalization of certain suggestions with different regions. This move is expected to streamline the import process for pets and improve their welfare during travel.
