Government must lead by example and settle R35m TV licence debt – Solly Malatsi urges Mashatile

A new funding model for the SABC is crucial for the broadcaster to provide quality public broadcasting services, according to Malatsi. He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to pay for the services they use to ensure financial sustainability. Government support is essential in leading by example and fulfilling obligations to the SABC.

On the other hand, AfriForum advocates for the scrapping of TV licenses, citing the government’s outstanding fees as evidence of the system’s failure. The organization highlighted the SABC’s struggle with increasing non-payment of TV licenses, indicating a flawed financing model.

AfriForum’s solution is privatisation to modernize the broadcaster and regain trust from viewers and listeners. The organization believes that the SABC must choose between sinking or swimming by breaking free from the outdated operating model.
