The Importance of a Fair and Transparent Legal System in South Sudan
EU Ambassador to South Sudan Timo Olkkonen emphasized the crucial role of a fair and transparent legal system in building a democratic society during a recent workshop in Juba. Attended by high-ranking officials, the event focused on validating the Judicial Reform Committee’s recommendations.
Olkkonen highlighted the significance of a strong and independent judiciary that is accessible to all, emphasizing that lasting peace, stability, and prosperity depend on the rule of law. He stressed the importance of judicial reform beyond functional improvements, underscoring the need to restore justice and regain public trust.
The workshop also addressed the critical gaps in the South Sudan legal system, with a staggering 1.75 million South Sudanese facing legal issues annually. Olkkonen outlined key reform priorities, including consistent application of laws, access to justice for all, and ending impunity.
The EU remains committed to supporting the judicial reform agenda in South Sudan, advocating for inclusivity and gender sensitivity in shaping a justice system that serves the needs of all citizens. The efforts of the JRC and partners in advancing judicial reform were acknowledged and praised.
