CSOs demand clarification on Betta Edu’s fraud exoneration

A coalition of civil society organisations in the Niger Delta region is seeking answers after reports surfaced that Dr. Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has been cleared of fraud allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The coalition is concerned that this clearance could tarnish the administration’s commitment to fighting corruption. They question the credibility of the EFCC’s decision, especially regarding allegations of approving travel expenses to a region without an airport.

The spokesperson for the group emphasized that integrity is paramount, and they will not support unethical behavior. They demand transparency and a public explanation for Edu’s clearance.

The coalition’s focus is solely on corruption allegations, not personal issues with Edu. They urge the EFCC to provide evidence and rationale for the clearance to maintain trust in the government and its institutions. Failure to do so may lead to nationwide protests.
