British MP proposes new bill for Palestinian statehood.

British MP Layla Moran is set to present a bill in UK parliament advocating for the recognition of Palestinian statehood. Moran, the first MP of Palestinian descent, has been championing this cause since 2017. The bill calls for the UK government to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state based on pre-1967 borders, acknowledging Palestinians’ right to self-determination. It also seeks to upgrade the Mission of Palestine in London to a full diplomatic mission.

Joined by MPs from various parties, Moran believes recognizing Palestinian statehood is crucial for a two-state solution and a symbol of support for both Israel and Palestine. The bill aligns with Labour’s commitment to recognizing Palestine in their election manifesto. However, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s delay in recognizing Palestine due to potential US relations strain has sparked controversy.

Notably, recent parliamentary motions urged actions against Israel, while Starmer considers sanctions on Israeli officials for disparaging remarks about Palestinians. Moran’s bill reflects a growing global movement towards recognizing Palestinian statehood and advocating for peace in the region.
