US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has hinted at possible restrictions on military aid to Israel in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. While in Israel, he stated that he would follow the law, including Memorandum National Security Memorandum 20, which links military assistance to compliance with international law.
Despite warnings issued to Israel in April and October about potential non-compliance, aid continued after some improvements were made. Blinken discussed these issues with Israeli leaders, emphasizing the importance of ensuring aid reaches Palestinians in Gaza.
He acknowledged progress at the Erez Crossing and the reanimation of the Jordanian corridor, but emphasized the need for sustained efforts. Blinken also rejected the rebuilding of Israeli settlements in Gaza, reaffirming US policy against reoccupation.
Blinken’s focus on humanitarian aid amidst other regional challenges demonstrates a commitment to resolving the conflict in Gaza. He emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of Palestinians while maintaining diplomatic efforts in the region.
