Zelensky signs decree to dissolve medical exam boards amid corruption scandal.

President Zelensky’s recent decree aims to eliminate corruption at medical examination commissions in Ukraine by the end of the year. These commissions have been involved in fraudulent activities that allow officials to obtain disability status through corrupt schemes, leading to benefits like evading military service and receiving higher pensions.

The decree includes setting up working groups to verify disability certificates, inspecting pension payments for officials with disabilities, and digitalizing the medical examination commission process. The Security Service of Ukraine has already exposed and dismantled several corruption schemes in 2024, resulting in the cancellation of fake disability certificates and charges against officials involved in criminal activities.

This move towards transparency and accountability comes at a crucial time for Ukraine, as the country battles against illegal smuggling and corruption that drain billions of dollars from state coffers. Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin even resigned following reports of prosecutors obtaining disability status unlawfully. With these measures in place, Ukraine is taking a significant step towards combating corruption and ensuring the integrity of its institutions.
