What Makes Manbij a Challenge for the SDF?

Renewed Protests in Manbij Against Imposed Educational Curricula

Residents of Manbij, located east of Aleppo, have once again taken to the streets to protest against the educational curricula enforced by the Autonomous Administration in areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). These protests are part of the city’s ongoing resistance to the SDF’s policies across social, military, and economic sectors.

The unrest in Manbij dates back to June 2021 when demonstrations erupted over forced conscription, resulting in casualties and arrests. The protests demanded the SDF’s withdrawal and the return of control to the city’s residents. Responding to the escalating tensions, the Autonomous Administration repealed the conscription law and initiated an investigation into the violent crackdown on protesters.

With the start of the new school year, the protests reignited due to objections to the new educational curricula perceived as culturally insensitive. The curriculum, which includes controversial content related to the PKK and Buddhism, has sparked widespread condemnation and led to a teacher and student strike in Manbij.

Supported by Syrian opposition institutions, the protests highlight a longstanding resistance in Manbij against the SDF’s imposition of agendas that undermine local culture and identity. The Syrian Interim Government has called on the United Nations to intervene and halt the enforcement of culturally inappropriate curricula, emphasizing the importance of preserving values and traditions.
