Arrests in Hungary linked to plot against protected individuals
Several arrests have been made in Hungary following a US tip-off about a plot against “protected individuals.” The Hungarian authorities acted on information provided by US intelligence services, leading to the apprehension of individuals allegedly planning to purchase weapons for an attack. The assault was reportedly planned to coincide with Hungary’s commemoration of the 1956 uprising.
A recent raid in Budapest’s leisure district may be connected to the thwarted attack, with half a dozen individuals taken into custody. The government emphasized the importance of personal security for protected figures in light of recent international events involving political figures being targeted.
This incident follows high-profile assassination attempts on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and former US President Donald Trump earlier this year. Both attackers reportedly had ties to the Ukrainian conflict. The Hungarian government, critical of Western support for Ukraine, advocates for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
