The House of Representatives Urges Swift Renewal of Nigeria’s Orbital Slots to Prevent $400m Loss

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently renew Nigeria’s two orbital slots granted by the International Telecommunication Union to avoid a potential financial loss of $400 million. The motion was brought forward by Tolani Shagaya, representing Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency in Kwara State.

Nigeria was granted three orbital slots crucial for telecommunication, broadcasting, weather monitoring, and national defense. However, only one slot is currently being utilized, leaving the other two at risk of reassignment if not used by the deadline in December 2024.

Shagaya emphasized the importance of fully utilizing these slots to safeguard Nigeria’s technological advancement and economic growth. The House stressed the need for the Federal Government to prioritize the protection and effective utilization of these orbital slots.

Efforts are being made to secure funding, explore partnerships, and intensify satellite development to prevent the loss of Nigeria’s assigned positions. The House Committee on Digital and Communications Technology has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive review to ensure compliance with ITU regulations.
