Peru’s Former President Alejandro Toledo Sentenced to 20 Years in Jail for Corruption
Former President of Peru, Alejandro Toledo, has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in jail for corruption and money-laundering. Prosecutors revealed that Toledo accepted $35 million in bribes from a Brazilian construction company in exchange for a contract to build a road in southern Peru during his term between 2001 and 2006. Toledo was extradited from California, where he had been living, back to Peru to face trial.
Judge Inés Rojas emphasized that Toledo had betrayed the trust of the Peruvian people by misusing public funds for personal gain. Toledo denied the allegations against him and appeared unremorseful during the court proceedings. The case is part of a larger scandal involving the Brazilian company, Odebrecht, which admitted to paying bribes to officials across Latin America and the US to secure government contracts.
Toledo’s conviction adds to the list of former Peruvian presidents facing legal troubles related to corruption allegations, highlighting the widespread issue of corruption in the country’s government.
