Former Peruvian President Toledo Receives 20-Year Prison Sentence for Corruption
If Monday’s conviction is upheld, Toledo, 78, would not be eligible to leave jail until the early 2040s
Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo was sentenced to over 20 years in prison for his involvement in the Odebrecht corruption scandal, receiving US$ 35 million in bribes for a construction project. Toledo becomes the second former Peruvian president convicted of corruption. Judge Inés Roja Contreras imposed nine years for corruption and 11 years and six months for money laundering. The ruling stated that Toledo had colluded with Odebrecht to secure a construction tender, causing damage to the state.
Despite health concerns, Toledo faces jail time and requests for house arrest were denied. The ruling will be appealed as Toledo continues to fight the charges. This landmark case marks a significant moment in Peruvian judicial history, holding corrupt officials accountable for their actions.
