Nomination meeting for new CJP postponed as SIC misses proceedings in Pakistan

Special Parliamentary Committee Meeting Delayed for CJP Nomination

The meeting of the Special Parliamentary Committee (SPC) to nominate the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) has been delayed after PTI-Sunni Ittehad Council members skipped proceedings. The committee aims to nominate the next CJP from among the three most senior Supreme Court judges.

With CJP Qazi Faez Isa set to retire on October 25, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah was previously lined up to be the next CJP under the seniority principle. However, the newly enacted 26th Constitutional Amendment has changed the process of appointing the CJP.

The process now involves the recommendation of the Special Parliamentary Committee for the appointment of the CJP from amongst the three most senior SC judges. The committee comprises eight MNAs and four senators nominated by their parliamentary leaders, based on party strength in parliament.

Stay tuned for more updates on the nomination of the next CJP by the Special Parliamentary Committee.
