The Federal Government is set to review compensation rates for landowners affected by projects to ensure fairness and justice. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, announced this at the 2024 National Technical Development Forum in Abuja. The theme of the forum is the review of compensation rates for crops and economic trees in Nigeria, as the current rates set in 2008 are outdated.
According to Dangiwa, the review aims to reflect the true market value of lost assets like cocoa, oil palm, rubber, and cashew trees, which are vital sources of income for communities. He emphasized the importance of fair compensation, considering the emotional and financial impact on affected landowners.
The government’s commitment to equitable compensation aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and aims to protect vulnerable groups. Dr. Aminu Bodinga highlighted the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project’s efforts to develop rural areas and ensure proper compensation for project-affected persons. The project, funded by the World Bank and other partners, aims to improve rural access, enhance livelihoods, and promote economic growth while prioritizing the well-being of communities.
