Kai Mykkänen, the current Minister of Climate and the Environment in Finland, has been elected as the new mayor of Espoo. He is set to take office on February 1, 2025, succeeding the long-serving mayor Jukka Mäkelä. Mykkänen won the election by securing 44 votes in the second round, defeating his opponent Tuula Antola, who received 31 votes.
With a Master of Social Sciences degree and extensive experience in public administration, Mykkänen is well-equipped to lead Espoo. The selection process involved interviews, assessments, and a comparison of qualifications, ultimately leading to his appointment as mayor. The position in Espoo is a fixed-term role of seven years, with the possibility of extending for up to four additional years.
Mykkänen’s leadership will focus on continuing Espoo’s progress in climate policy and sustainable urban development. As he takes over from Mäkelä, who has been at the helm since 2011, Mykkänen will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the city.
