Italy proposes creating a buffer zone with a reinforced contingent of UN peacekeepers on the border of Lebanon with Israel, said Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani after visiting Palestine and Israel. Strengthening the Lebanese army, creating a buffer zone with more powers, and different rules of engagement are part of the Italian proposal to address the crisis.
According to Tajani, the Italian solution to the crisis was discussed with Israeli counterparts, emphasizing the need to respect Italian UNIFIL servicemen’s inviolability and strengthening the UN peacekeeping presence in the region.
Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon have led to casualties and mass displacement in the region, with ongoing tensions between the two sides.
