IDF Chief Eisenkot speaks on haredi draft exemption – Israel News

Preventing Military Exemptions for Haredi Men: A National Debate

A government bill proposing exemptions for military-age haredi (ultra-Orthodox) men from IDF service is sparking controversy in Israel. National Unity MK Gadi Eisenkot warns that such a bill could create a “fault line” in Israeli society, undermining national security and solidarity.

Eisenkot suggests extreme parliamentary measures to counter the bill, including formulating competing legislation and demanding faster drafting of eligible haredi men. As negotiations continue, a draft bill is being crafted to set quotas and sanctions for haredi conscription.

In light of opposition and demands for equal military burden-sharing, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant seeks support from an opposition party. However, United Torah Judaism chairman Yitzhak Goldknopf has threatened to block the 2025 budget if the haredi draft bill is not prioritized.

This debate highlights the complexity of balancing military obligations with religious exemptions, raising critical questions about societal cohesion and national security.
