Hong Kong civil servants are now prohibited from using unauthorized messaging and cloud storage services like WhatsApp, WeChat, and Google Drive on their work computers. This decision was made to address “severe internet safety risks,” according to the city’s tech minister, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong.
Sun Dong mentioned that the restrictions on civil servants’ desktops are similar to those enforced by authorities in the United States and mainland China. The ban is expected to be fully implemented by the end of this month.
The minister emphasized the importance of cybersecurity, stating that hacking incidents have become more severe over the past year. While acknowledging the inconvenience this policy may cause, Sun Dong believes that these measures are necessary to enhance cybersecurity measures within the government.
