Finland’s president: NATO vital for EU security, US power

Finnish President Stubb Emphasizes Commitment to NATO Amid Russian Threats

Finnish President Alexander Stubb recently highlighted his country’s new dedication to the NATO military alliance in response to threats from Russia and other sources. In an interview with DW’s political correspondent Hans Brandt during a visit to Berlin, Stubb stressed the importance of NATO’s strong deterrence capabilities, including troops, missiles, and nuclear deterrence.

Finland’s Contribution to NATO

Finland, bordering Russia, was shaken by the invasion of Ukraine, leading the country, along with Sweden, to depart from its long-standing military neutrality and join NATO. Stubb noted Finland’s significant military capabilities and its role as a security provider within NATO, emphasizing the need for Europe to invest in defense amid evolving threats.

Future of NATO and US Relations

Stubb also discussed the potential NATO membership for Ukraine and the importance of supporting the country in its conflict with Russia. Regarding the upcoming US presidential election, Stubb expressed confidence in NATO’s continued relevance, regardless of the election outcome, as the US seeks to maintain its superpower status and alliances with European nations.
