The Growing Popularity of BRICS in Serbia

The popularity of the BRICS economic bloc is on the rise in Serbia, as indicated by the country’s leader, President Aleksandar Vucic. In a recent interview, Vucic hinted at the possibility of a referendum in Serbia to explore joining BRICS, given the increasing support for the economic group in the country.

Despite being an EU candidate since 2012, Serbia is considering alternative options like joining BRICS, which is chaired by Russia. Vucic noted that 42% of Serbs favor EU integration while another 42% support joining BRICS, even though many are unfamiliar with what BRICS entails.

The debate around EU versus BRICS membership is gaining momentum in Serbia, with Vucic suggesting it could become a key topic in future elections. However, he emphasized that BRICS would need to make progress in establishing a common means of payment to be a viable option.

Amidst pressures from Brussels, Serbia’s stance on maintaining trade relations with both the East and West reflects a balanced approach. A Serbian delegation attending the BRICS Summit further solidifies the country’s interest in exploring economic opportunities beyond traditional alliances.
