EU accuses Russia of ‘unprecedented’ meddling in referendum – RT Russia & Former Soviet Union

Brussels has accused Moscow of pressuring Moldova over its EU integration referendum and presidential election on Sunday. A constitutional amendment aimed at eventually joining the European Union is set to pass by a slim margin despite Russia’s interference. The EU has offered Moldova €1.8 billion to support integration efforts.

Early results showed a narrow majority in favor of the amendment proposed by pro-Western President Maia Sandu. The vote count faced criticism from the Kremlin, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling the dynamics “difficult to explain.” Meanwhile, the OSCE praised the election organization but noted issues with opposition representation.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Moldova to announce the investment plan and urged citizens to vote for integration. Sandu declared victory with a slight lead in favor of the amendment. Despite challenges from Russia, Moldova’s path towards closer ties with the EU seems to be progressing.
