Notorious drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s sons are considering a plea deal with US prosecutors, their lawyer revealed during a court hearing in Chicago. The brothers, Ovidio and Joaquin Lopez, are accused of running the Sinaloa cartel and trafficking drugs into the US.
Known as the “El Chapitos” faction, the Guzman sons have pleaded not guilty. Their father is serving a life sentence in a US prison. The reported plea talks follow the arrest of one brother with rival cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in July.
Zambada’s lawyer claims his client was forced to Texas, where Mexican prosecutors have filed kidnapping charges against Joaquin Lopez. The Guzman brothers could provide essential evidence in the case against Zambada.
The brothers’ defense lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, mentioned that they face distinct cases. The US justice system hopes to settle Ovidio’s case before trial, focusing on disrupting the cartel’s drug operations.
Following the arrests, a cartel war erupted, leading to violence in Culiacan. Over 70 deaths and numerous kidnappings have been reported. The Sinaloa cartel’s brutality is known, with cases of torture and cruel acts detailed in charges against the Guzman brothers.
