Exploring the Marine Mammals of Khasab, Musandam

The Environment Authority (EA) has kicked off the fourth phase of a marine mammals survey in Khasab, Musandam, aiming to create a comprehensive database of these fascinating creatures within the Musandam Natural Park Reserve. The survey, conducted in collaboration with various government agencies, will continue until October 31.

Utilizing advanced technology including high-quality cameras, drone cameras, and GoPros, the team led by Aida bint Khalaf al Jabriya, is actively monitoring and recording the species, group sizes, behaviors, and sounds of marine mammals. The survey also encourages local fishermen to participate by documenting marine mammals through photos and videos.

Oman’s strategic location makes it a hub for diverse marine mammal species, playing a vital role in maintaining marine ecosystems. EA is committed to using all resources available to protect marine mammals from potential threats, ensuring the sustainability of this thriving ecosystem in Musandam.
