Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced that the ban on single-use plastic cutlery is aimed at promoting a change in behavior among residents, rather than penalizing businesses. The enforcement of the ban will target retailers, eateries, and hoteliers who continue to sell or offer plastic items after the six-month grace period.
Lee emphasized the importance of fostering a plastic-free culture and mentioned that the government will allow businesses a reasonable time to adjust their practices before imposing penalties.
The ban officially came into effect on April 22, following a successful six-month grace period that ended recently.
