The heads of the United Nations World Food Programme and UNICEF have reached out to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for assistance in easing the suffering of civilians in Gaza, West Bank, and Lebanon. In a letter dated Oct. 11, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell and WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian action amidst a drastic decrease in aid entering Gaza.
Israel’s military offensive in northern Gaza has exacerbated the situation, leading to concerns of a looming famine. The UN officials urged Israel to fulfill its obligations to enable effective relief operations and safeguard the well-being of civilians and aid workers. They also called for clear commitments from Netanyahu to address the crisis.
Russell and McCain highlighted the importance of security assurances and operational support to facilitate humanitarian efforts. They emphasized the need for a ceasefire and the release of hostages to restore stability in the region. Despite challenges, they remain hopeful for positive outcomes with sustained cooperation.
