Political Killings Rock Mozambique Amid Election Controversy

Amidst growing tensions following the recent election in Mozambique, a lawyer and Podemos party spokesman were tragically killed in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique. Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe were shot dead by unknown gunmen as they were preparing to challenge the election results, sparking accusations of vote-rigging against the ruling Frelimo party.

The violent assassinations occurred late on a Friday night, with witnesses reporting that about 25 shots were fired into the victims’ car by unidentified individuals. The murders have been condemned as politically motivated by various groups, including the Center for Democracy and Human Rights.

Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, supported by Podemos, has rejected the preliminary election results and accused national security forces of being involved in the killings. International organizations like the African Union and the European Union have also expressed deep concern and called for independent investigations into these tragic events.

The incidents underscore the fragile political situation in Mozambique and the urgent need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
