South Korea Needs Nuclear Deterrent to Counter North Korea, Claims Seoul Mayor
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon has urged South Korea to acquire a nuclear deterrent to keep North Korea at bay. In a Facebook post, Oh expressed anger and frustration over repeated threats from Pyongyang, including sending trash-laden balloons and bombarding areas near the border.
According to Oh, North Korea’s brazen provocations are due to its possession of nuclear weapons, while South Korea lacks such capabilities, creating an asymmetric situation. He emphasized the urgent need to strengthen national defense through nuclear deterrence.
While Oh advocates for Seoul acquiring a nuclear arsenal, President Yoon Suk Yeol has reiterated the country’s commitment to a nuclear deterrence strategy with the US. Tensions have escalated on the Korean peninsula, with North Korea threatening retaliation and carrying out actions to separate from the South.
North Korea has denounced joint military exercises between South Korea and the US as preparations for invasion. The region remains on edge as both Koreas navigate a complex and volatile relationship.
