The Fight to Save Samir: Labor Union Prepares for Sit-In
The Democratic Confederation of Labor at Samir is gearing up for a major sit-in at the company’s oil refinery during the first week of November. Despite being inactive since 2015, the refinery has reached a crucial stage in legal proceedings at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.
The union is demanding the rescue of the plant from decline and collapse, as well as the protection and restoration of workers’ and retirees’ rights. They emphasize the catastrophic situation faced by Samir Company after years of production disruptions, highlighting the loss of national interests and workers’ rights.
The union is placing the blame on the government for privatization and conflicts of interest that have led to the current crisis. They are calling for action to revive oil refining at the Mohammedia refinery and ensure energy sovereignty. This could involve transferring assets to the state, private sector acquisition, or self-management in collaboration with major stakeholders.
The sit-in is a last resort following government inaction, and the union is determined to fight for justice and workers’ rights at Samir.
