The First-Ever Global Conference on AI in Advancing the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention
Set to take place on October 22-24, 2024 in Rabat, the Global Conference on AI in Advancing the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) represents a significant milestone in the exploration of how emerging technologies can impact international security. Government officials, international organizations, experts, and stakeholders from the chemical industry will convene to discuss the potential and challenges of using AI in chemical disarmament.
While AI has the potential to enhance verification mechanisms and transparency in the implementation of the CWC, there are concerns about its misuse by non-state actors. Therefore, establishing robust ethical and regulatory frameworks is crucial. Additionally, the conference will address the need to ensure equitable access to AI, particularly for developing countries in Africa, to bridge the digital divide.
By promoting the peaceful applications of chemistry, AI can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This conference aims to pave the way for responsible global governance of emerging technologies, positioning AI as a tool for peace and sustainable development.
